find_referencing_symbols degraded to file-level attribution for any
reference located inside a Go struct body, interface body or const
group: request_containing_symbol found no admissible container, so
request_referencing_symbols logged "Could not find containing symbol
... Returning file symbol instead" and fell back to the file symbol,
losing the answer the tool exists to give.
Root cause: the candidate-container filter admitted only Python's
container kinds {Method, Function, Class} (plus Variable via the
one-liner-exempt path). The language server is not at fault:
hierarchicalDocumentSymbolSupport is declared and the DocumentSymbol
tree is complete, but Go structs arrive as SymbolKind.Struct,
interfaces as Interface and const-group members as Constant - none of
which were admitted, so every candidate was rejected.
Fix, mirroring the existing structure of the filter:
- Struct and Interface join the multi-line container whitelist,
- Constant joins Variable on the one-liner-exempt path (const-group
members are one-liners by nature, exactly like the module-level
variables that path already serves).
The Python suite shows no attribution change
(test/solidlsp/python/test_symbol_retrieval.py: 80 passed). Languages
whose containers use the added kinds (e.g. Rust and C structs,
TypeScript interfaces) get the same admission; verified for Go and
Python only.
Regression coverage: new Go fixture containment_sample.go with a
const-iota group, a struct field and an interface method all
referencing a named type; four tests assert containing-symbol and
referencing-symbol attribution, and all four fail against the
pre-change ls.py (verified). Full go-marker suite: 21 passed,
1 skipped.
Adds support for Wolfram Language (.wl, .wls files) using the official

The Nextflow language server schedules a debounced (1s) AST update on every
didOpen/didChange, and LanguageService.references is the only request that does
not await it -- documentSymbol, codeLens, documentLink and semanticTokensFull
all do. A references request issued inside that window races the recompile of
the file it asks about and can return an empty list, which is what the macOS CI
runner hit. Send a documentSymbol request for the same file first, which blocks
server-side until the pending update has been applied.
Also compare reference paths using the platform separator in the tests, since
relativePath is OS-native and the hardcoded forward slashes failed on Windows.
Add a Deno language server backed by the Deno CLI's built-in `deno lsp`,
serving TypeScript/JavaScript in Deno projects. Unlike the plain
typescript-language-server it understands Deno module resolution
(npm:/jsr:/https: imports) and the `Deno.*` global namespace.
It is experimental and must be selected explicitly via
`language_servers: [deno]`; it overlaps the TypeScript server on file
extensions, so it is not auto-detected. Requires the `deno` CLI on PATH.
Tests run in CI: the `deno` marker joins the other-langs batch, which now
installs Deno via denoland/setup-deno. Off-CI and wherever the CLI is
absent they skip through the central conftest guard, following the existing
pattern for toolchain-gated language servers. Hover is covered explicitly,
including hover on a `Deno.*` global, which is the capability this server
adds over the TypeScript one.
- PHP/Intelephense: expose `file_filter` via `ls_specific_settings["php"]`, so that additional
extensions containing PHP sources (e.g. Drupal's `.module` / `.install` / `.inc` / `.theme`)
become visible to the symbol tools and are indexed by the language server
- PHP: treat `.phtml` files as PHP sources by default (all PHP language servers)
gopls reports the document-symbol range of single type/var/const
declarations starting at the identifier (after the keyword), unlike func
declarations whose range includes the func keyword. Serena derives both
the displayed body and the replacement range from that range, so the
keyword was dropped from both for these declarations and a
keyword-inclusive edit corrupted the file (type Foo became type type Foo).
Override request_document_symbols in gopls to extend the range start back
to the keyword when only the keyword and indentation precede the
identifier, recomputing the body so it stays consistent with the
replacement range. Funcs, grouped declarations, and selectionRange are
left untouched.
Adds a unit test for the symbol body and range plus an end-to-end
replace_symbol_body round-trip regression test.
Make the Svelte companion TypeScript server raise on readiness and
indexing timeouts instead of silently proceeding with a partial index,
turning flaky/wrong cross-file results into clear failures:
- TypeScriptLanguageServer: timeout handling factored into overridable
hooks (_handle_server_ready_timeout, _handle_project_indexing_timeout);
the base server keeps its historical permissive behavior, so plain
TypeScript setups are unchanged.
- SvelteTypeScriptServer: both overrides raise TimeoutError; only the
indexing-timeout error includes describe_indexing_state(), instead of
serving requests from a cold or partially indexed program.
- Configurable server_ready_timeout / indexing_timeout via
ls_specific_settings.
- SvelteLanguageServer: file-open failures during companion preparation
raise SvelteCompanionPreparationError with a count-first file listing
(capped at 10), chained to the first underlying error so the cause is
visible without DEBUG logging.
Apply the same fail-loudly principle to the test fixture bootstrap:
- Svelte test repo: npm ci with a committed package-lock.json, removing
dependency-resolution non-determinism from CI runs.
- Run svelte-kit sync explicitly during fixture setup and fail loudly if
.svelte-kit/tsconfig.json cannot be generated. The fixture's "prepare"
script masks sync failures ("svelte-kit sync || echo ''"), and a known
npm bug (npm/cli#4828) can silently skip platform-specific optional
dependencies; the result is unresolvable $lib path aliases and
cross-file tests failing with partial results instead of a clear,
actionable error.
- codespell: skip third-party fixture repositories, using the anchored
pattern ./test/resources/repos (codespell matches skip globs against
the ./-prefixed paths it walks, so an anchor-less pattern never
matches).
Also add direct regression tests for the timeout-policy split
(test/solidlsp/test_typescript_timeout_policy.py: base stays
permissive, companion raises, settings plumbing and precedence, and
start-or-completion indexing-wait semantics). The tests use no mocking or
patching of any kind; a hand-written call-recording fake drives the companion
guard against real file discovery under a pytest tmp_path. They spawn no LS
process and avoid external readiness races; one wait test uses a real Timer
with a 30s ceiling.
The configuration docs state that the TypeScript table lists both knobs; the
Svelte table lists indexing_timeout, with readiness inheritance documented in
prose.
Register the LATEX language (.tex/.bib/.sty/.cls) backed by texlab,
downloaded as a sha256-verified single-binary from GitHub Releases
(v5.25.1) across macOS/Linux/Windows. Document symbols expose the
sectioning hierarchy; definitions/references cover labels and citations.
Includes a smoke-test fixture repo and basic document-symbol tests.

Serena's file-to-language router already maps `.t` to the Perl LS
(`Language.PERL` in `solidlsp/ls_config.py`), but the
Perl::LanguageServer-side `fileFilter` was hardcoded to
`[".pm", ".pl"]`. As a result Perl::LanguageServer skipped `.t`
files entirely: symbol queries on a `.t` returned empty, and
references to `.pm`/`.pl` subs missed any callers defined in
`.t` files.
Add `.t` to the filter, deduplicate the two `fileFilter` literals
into a `_FILE_FILTER` class constant, and note the sync requirement
with `Language.PERL.get_source_fn_matcher()` in a comment. Cover
the behavior with a new cross-file references test plus a `helper.t`
fixture; the test fails on unpatched `main` and passes on this
branch.
Introduces Language.ADA backed by AdaCore's Ada Language Server (ALS),
the standard LSP-compliant server for Ada — and SPARK, since both share
the .ads/.adb file extensions and ALS distinguishes SPARK by source-level
pragmas/aspects rather than by file type.
ALS is auto-downloaded from AdaCore's GitHub releases (linux-x64/arm64,
darwin-x64/arm64, win32-x64) using the LanguageServerDependencyProviderSinglePath
pattern, with SHA256 verification per-platform. Users can override the
downloaded binary by setting ls_specific_settings.ada.ls_path to a
pre-installed ada_language_server (e.g. from Alire, GNAT Studio, or the
VS Code Ada extension).
Test repo is a minimal multi-file GNAT project (default.gpr, helper.ads,
helper.adb, main.adb). Tests modelled on test_php_basic.py: ls_running,
find_definition (within/across), find_references (within/across),
find_symbol, document_symbols, hierarchical document symbols,
bare-symbol-name sanity check.
* feat(jdtls): surface Lombok-generated methods in document symbols
JDTLS' DocumentSymbolHandler filtered out every SourceMethod where
JDTUtils.isGenerated() was true, so Lombok-synthesised methods (getX/setX,
builder(), equals/hashCode/toString, withX, fluent accessors, ...) never
reached the LSP client. As a result Serena's symbol-aware tools — find_symbol,
get_symbols_overview, replace_symbol_body, insert_before_symbol,
insert_after_symbol — could not see, address or edit any Lombok-generated
member; only search_for_pattern / replace_content (text-based) worked.
Upstream introduced an opt-in preference java.symbols.includeGeneratedCode
in eclipse-jdtls/eclipse.jdt.ls#3706 (merged 2026-02-24) and surfaced it
through redhat-developer/vscode-java#4335. First vscode-java release with
the new JDTLS build is v1.53.0 (2026-02-26). Serena was pinned to v1.42.0-561,
well before the fix existed.
Changes:
- New ls_specific_settings.java.lombok_show_generated setting (default true);
forwarded to JDTLS as java.symbols.includeGeneratedCode in initialize
params. Older servers ignore the unknown preference key silently.
- Bump bundled vscode-java DEFAULT 1.42.0-561 -> 1.54.0-923 (brings JRE
21.0.10, Lombok 1.18.39 and Equinox launcher 1.7.100). INITIAL stays at
1.42.0-561, so per the per-version install-dir convention from #1438 the
new build lands in vscode-java-1.54.0-923/ while legacy vscode-java/
caches and any explicit vscode_java_version: '1.42.0-561' override keep
working.
- New VsixResourcePaths dataclass + INITIAL/DEFAULT_VSCODE_JAVA_PATHS pin
the JRE / Lombok / launcher filenames *inside* the VSIX. Without this,
bumping the archive would break users on legacy 1.42.0-561 because
resource paths inside the archive change between releases. Resolution
mirrors SHA pinning: known versions get their pinned paths; any other
version raises SolidLSPException with a pointer to upstream-jdtls mode
(which derives paths dynamically and needs no pinning).
- Drop dead 'static/vscode-java/...' placeholder in initialize params; the
real runtimes[] is overwritten below from runtime_dependency_paths
.jre_home_path, which is correct in both default-VSIX and upstream-jdtls
modes.
- Test fixtures: Lombok provided dep in test_repo/pom.xml plus
LombokModel / FluentLombokModel / DefaultGreeter covering @Data, @Builder
(toBuilder=true), @With, @Delegate, @AllArgsConstructor, @NoArgsConstructor
and @Accessors(fluent=true). Regression test in test_java_basic.py
asserts every generated-method shape lands in document symbols.
Closes#1432
The TypeScript language server was initialized with a single workspace folder,
so tsserver could not discover references across sibling packages in a monorepo.
This adds an `additional_workspace_folders` setting in
`ls_specific_settings` that accepts a list of directory paths.
Each folder is registered as an LSP workspace folder during initialization,
and a representative .ts file is opened from each to trigger tsserver project
loading. This enables `find_referencing_symbols` and `request_references` to
return results from across package boundaries.

* Fix: send languageId 'typescriptreact' / 'javascriptreact' for .tsx / .jsx
Without this, .tsx files are opened with languageId 'typescript', so
tsserver parses JSX as syntax errors and recovers by truncating the
enclosing symbol's range at the first multi-line JSX expression. The
resulting symptoms:
- find_symbol(name, include_body=True) on a React component returns a
body that ends mid-component, hiding everything below.
- The same component shows up as multiple Method-kind symbols (one per
call site) plus a separately-tracked Constant for the definition,
because tsserver mistakes JSX-tag tokens for member access.
Reproducer (before fix, real-world TSX file):
SidebarPDF range = [11:1-25:207] (truncated at first JSX, line 25)
After fix:
SidebarPDF range = [11:1-281:2] (full body)
The base SolidLanguageServer._get_language_id_for_file is explicitly
designed for this — its docstring says "Override in subclasses to
return file-specific language IDs." This change just exercises that
hook for the React file extensions.
Adds a regression test + jsx_component.tsx fixture covering the same
arrow-function-with-multi-line-JSX-ternary pattern that triggers the
truncation in real codebases (see oraios/serena#1029 for an earlier
report whose root cause was not identified).
* feat: add JSON language server support via vscode-json-languageserver (fixes#1391)
Add support for JSON files using the `vscode-json-languageserver` npm package
from Microsoft. This provides document symbol navigation and hover information
for JSON files.
The implementation follows the existing YAML language server pattern:
- Auto-installs `vscode-json-languageserver` via npm on first use
- Requires Node.js and npm
- Marked as experimental (must be explicitly specified)

* feat: add mSL (mIRC Scripting Language) support
Add language server support for mIRC Scripting Language (.mrc files).
mSL is used in mIRC and AdiIRC IRC clients for scripting bots, games,
and automation.
The implementation uses a custom Python-based LSP server (pygls) that
parses aliases, events, menus, dialogs, and CTCP handlers. Dependencies
(pygls, lsprotocol) are installed in an isolated venv on first use.
Includes test repo, integration tests, and documentation updates.
* style: apply ruff formatting to msl_language_server.py
* fix: remove INITIALIZE handler that crashes pygls 2.x
pygls 2.x handles the initialize request internally. Overriding
it via @server.feature(lsp.INITIALIZE) causes the LSP subprocess
to crash. Removing the handler lets pygls auto-advertise capabilities
based on registered features (document_symbol, workspace_symbol).
* fix: update embedded LSP script for pygls 2.x
pygls 2.x moved LanguageServer from pygls.server to pygls.lsp.server.
Update import and bump requirement from pygls>=1.3.0 to pygls>=2.0.0.
* refactor: ship mSL LSP as package module, not runtime disk write
Per maintainer feedback: the mSL LSP is a Python script, so it should
ship as a module inside the package rather than being written to disk
at runtime.
Changes:
- Extract embedded LSP script to msl_lsp_server.py (proper module)
- Simplify MslLanguageServer: remove venv creation, disk writes,
_create_msl_lsp_files(). DependencyProvider now just returns
sys.executable and launches the sibling module directly.
- Add pygls>=2.0.0 and lsprotocol>=2023.0.0 to pyproject.toml deps
* fix: regenerate uv.lock after upstream v1.1.0 merge
* feat(msl): add references, definitions, and expand test coverage
- Add textDocument/references handler for cross-file alias reference finding
- Add textDocument/definition handler for go-to-definition support
- Handle $ prefix on cursor position for mSL identifiers
- Fix pre-existing mypy error in agent.py (dict[str, object] -> dict[str, str | int])
- Add MSL to _LANGUAGE_PYTEST_MARKERS in conftest.py
- Add MSL parametrized cases to test_find_symbol_stable and test_find_symbol_references_stable
- Expand test repo with cross-file reference examples (main.mrc <-> utils.mrc)
- Add within-file and cross-file reference tests to test_msl_basic.py
- Update docs and CHANGELOG to reflect expanded capabilities

* fix(msl): add hover handler, fix cross-file references via filesystem scan
Root causes of 4 CI test failures:
- textDocument/hover was not implemented (test_find_symbol_stable needs it)
- references/workspace_symbol/definition only searched opened documents,
missing files not explicitly opened by the client
- pygls.uris.to_fs_path returns lowercase drive letters on Windows,
causing URI mismatch with the framework's repository path comparison
Fixes:
- Add textDocument/hover handler returning definition snippets in Markdown
- Add _get_all_mrc_files() to scan workspace filesystem for all .mrc files
- Read workspace roots from server.workspace (pygls 2.x API) instead of
broken monkey-patching of server.lsp
- Use pathlib.Path.resolve() to normalize drive letter casing on Windows
- Simplify __main__ to just server.start_io()
All 12 tests pass locally (10 solidlsp + 2 serena_agent integration).

Adds tests for name resolution for each language and fixes the name resolution where tests have failed.
Also:
Extends python tests to cover ty
Extends skipping conditions for several LS (but only when not in CI)
Better test output in CI
Removed a wrong python test (started failing for ty and should have failed for pyright too)
References and definition not working yet. Since ansible resolves same files as yaml LS, we will need to add disambiguation later.
Work in progress, improvements on the language server itself are being worked on, ansible support in Serena will be extended accordingly in the future.
Integrates the Nomic Foundation @nomicfoundation/solidity-language-server
as a new Language.SOLIDITY backend (experimental). Supports .sol files with
go-to-definition, find references, document symbols, hover, and diagnostics.
The server is automatically installed via npm on first use.
Fix PHP symbol retrieval via Intelephense LSP
* intelephense.py: Add missing client capability declarations for
documentSymbol (with hierarchical support), references, hover, and
workspace symbol. Without these, Intelephense does not advertise
documentSymbolProvider and returns empty results for get_symbols_overview.
Add PHP tests validating hierarchical symbols and LS routing fix
- test_document_symbols_hierarchical_structure: verifies Intelephense
returns DocumentSymbol[] with class/method hierarchy (not flat
SymbolInformation[]) when hierarchicalDocumentSymbolSupport is declared
- test_full_symbol_tree_within_file: verifies request_full_symbol_tree
scoped to sample.php returns Dog/Animal/greet/fetch with Dog containing
greet as a child (not at root level)
- test_find_symbol_within_php_file: verifies find_symbol with a PHP
file path (relative_path=) routes to the PHP language server via
get_language_server() rather than iterating all servers
Peripheral changes:
- symbol.py (LanguageServerSymbolRetriever.find_symbols): When searching
within a specific file, route to the file-type-appropriate language server
via get_language_server() instead of querying all servers. This ensures
PHP files are served by Intelephense and not silently skipped.

logic (PATH lookup, version logging, graceful degradation, download
fallback). Remove duplicate ALU symbol tests that tested the same
LSP operations already covered by counter tests.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* Fix SystemVerilog LSP convention deviations from code review
- Add client/registerCapability handler (all other 31 LSPs have it)
- Add locale: en to initialize params (project convention)
- Change log.debug to log.info for window/logMessage handler
- Fix dead code in test_find_references_cross_file skip/assert logic
- Move repeated imports to module top level in detection tests
- Remove unused IS_WINDOWS/IS_UNIX variables and sys import
- Fix hardcoded line number comment to semantic description
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* Fix Windows CI verible path: flat zip structure has no bin/ subdir
The Windows verible zip extracts to verible-VERSION-win64/ with
executables directly in the root (no bin/ subdirectory), unlike
Linux/macOS tar.gz which have bin/ subdirectory.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* Fix macOS CI verible path: tar.gz extracts with -macOS suffix
Each platform has different directory naming in verible releases:
- Linux: verible-VERSION/bin/ (no suffix)
- macOS: verible-VERSION-macOS/bin/ (has -macOS suffix)
- Windows: verible-VERSION-win64/ (flat, no bin/ subdir)
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* Refactor: read Verible version from settings instead of hardcoding
Extract hardcoded version string into _custom_settings.get("verible_version")
with the current version as default. This allows version override via
project.yml without changing source code.
Also introduce DEFAULT_VERIBLE_VERSION constant in detection tests
for consistency.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* Add rename tests and strengthen existing SystemVerilog tests
- Add TestSystemVerilogRename: within-file, cross-file, module rename

Fixes longstanding clangd issues (wrong selectionRange, failure to take compile_commands.json into account) and enhances documentation about C/C++ support
